II. Narrative Description of Community

Use the data you collected above to develop a series of paragraphs that describe your community (zip code) and draw comparisons with the rest of the state and / or district. Here is an example of how to do this.

The median household income in this section of Cranston is $32,323, which is approximately twenty thousand dollars less than the median household income in Rhode Island (54,060). The median family income in this section of Cranston, $37,943, is thirty thousand dollars less than that of the average Rhode Island median family income, $68,740. This is a huge difference! Compared to the average 8.3% in Rhode Island, Cranston has 10% more families living below the poverty level.

Of the 228,391 children living in Rhode Island, 15,626 populate this section of Cranston; that's roughly 15%. The majority of children living in this part of Cranston live in a household with two parents. Approximately three quarters of children live in a household with two parents, which is pretty comparable to the Rhode Island percentage, 70%.

We chose to add a lot of statistics about education so that we could relate them to our readings in Savage Inequalities.Children in Cranston seem to be receiving a good education as both fourth and eifth graders are at or above the proficiency levels in math and reading. More than 80% of 4th graders are at or above the reading proficiency level while 68% of 8th graders are at or above the reading proficiency levels. Additionally, both the high school attendance rate and the high school graduation rate are also respectable as 91% of high school students attend school and 82% graduate. Furthermore, it seems that most students come in with English as their first language, as only 5% are classified as English language learners. There also isn't a large majority of children enrolled in special education (18%), which alludes to the fact that lead poisoning, something mentioned in Savage Inequalities is most likely not extremely prevalent. Finally, the percentages in Cranston are typically higher than those in RI (80% of 4th graders at or above the reading proficiency level compared to 67% in RI), which shows that Cranston has a respectable education system.

All of the percentages in Cranston seem to be lower compared to the averages in RI as a whole in regards to safety. The percentage of child abuse and neglect only differs by .6% in cranston as Rhode Island's percentage is 10.7%. Furthermore, domestic violence does seem a bit more prevalent both in Cranston and RI, but the percentage in Cranston is lower by 2%. Also, the rate of children with incarcerated parents in Cranston is about 3% less than in RI.

The children of Cranston consitute about 14% of the total population in RI (17,098/247,822). The percentage of children living in single-parent families is pretty similar to RI as a whole (24% in Cranston, 30% in RI). Furthermore, the percentage of children living in families below the federal poverty threshold in Cranston (9.1%) is about half the precentage in RI (16.9%). The percentage of teens not in school and not working in Cranston (15%) is a bit higher than the average in RI (7.3%). Lastly the percentage of households with grandparents financially responsible for grandchildren is identical in both Cranston and RI (4%).
